Wikipedia Helped Reinvigorate His Career

Meet Larry Beckett

Larry Beckett is a well-known, talented poet and musician — and not that long ago, a Wikipedia skeptic.

Larry BeckettBeckett’s wife, Laura, contacted us to expand and clean up the existing Wikipedia entry on him to highlight his poetry career.

Beckett has long been linked with his 1970s songwriting partner, Tim Buckley, and their famous song, “Song to the Siren.” Beckett has achieved a wealth of success since Buckley’s untimely death in 1975. Yet for many people, that song is Beckett’s most well-known achievement.

For 50 years, Beckett worked on American Cycle, a series of long poems that includes works on subjects such as Paul Bunyan, Chief Joseph, and Amelia Earhart, just to name a few.

Before we started on this project, Beckett wondered what difference could an updated Wikipedia article make?

A mere five months later, he received his answer.

Beckett said he’d been approached by a media company that wanted to release a live CD of his poetry, with digital distribution. The company’s owner was impressed with his Wikipedia entry and wanted to set up a meeting.

Today, poetry from American Cycle is available on all streaming platforms.
