Naomi Was Ready for Wikipedia
Wikipedia’s Gender Imbalance
Since its founding, Wikipedia has had a significant imbalance in its articles about women, people of color, and the LGBTQI+ community. In September 2023, only 19.65% of biographical articles were about women.
When Naomi* contacted To the Point, she wanted to know if she qualified for a Wikipedia article.
She is an entrepreneur, author, and advocate for maternal and infant health. Naomi is also the former editor of a well-known lifestyle magazine written for women of color.
A cursory look at the media coverage about Naomi showed that she definitely met Wikipedia’s notability requirement for a new article.
Working through Wikipedia’s Women in Red WikiProject, focused on reducing systemic bias regarding gender representation, we submitted the page for creation. The page was accepted the same day it was submitted!
We want to help make stories like Naomi’s an everyday experience.
Inclusion matters.
